Silat telah melalui sejarah yang panjang dan gemilang. Sejarah Malaysia telah membuktikan bahawa sebelum kemunculan senjata api dan meriam, kerajaan-kerajaan purba Nusantara telah dipertahankan dengan baik daripada pencerobohan daripada empayar asing terutamanya orang Eropah dan Asia Timur. Di zaman Kesultanan Melaka, eksploitasi lagenda Hang Tuah selama-lamanya terpahat di hati Melayu di mana-mana. Baru-baru ini, abad yang lalu menyaksikan usaha negara oleh tokoh-tokoh besar Kemerdekaan seperti Datuk Bahaman dan Mat Kilau dari Pahang, Panglima Salleh dari Johor dan Yeop Mahidin dari Perak, yang kesemuanya adalah pendekar dalam hak mereka sendiri. Di kepulauan Indonesia, pertempuran berdarah dilakukan untuk mendapatkan kembali kemerdekaan daripada penjajah, dan nama-nama seperti Kyai Abbas Jamil Buntet dikenang atas pengorbanan dan usaha mereka. Selepas Kemerdekaan, silat berkembang menjadi seni mempertahankan diri yang diinstitusikan dan diiktiraf secara rasmi di Malaysia dan di rantau ini. Untuk mempromosikan silat di Malaysia, Persekutuan Silat Kebangsaan Malaysia (Persekutuan Silat Kebangsaan Malaysia atau PESAKA, http://pesakamalaysia.org) telah ditubuhkan pada tahun 1983 oleh empat guru pengasas, masing-masing mengetuai gaya utama. Silat Seni Gayong diasaskan oleh Datuk Meor Abdul Rahman Meor Hashim, Seni Silat Cekak oleh ustaz Hanafi Haji Ahmad, Seni Silat Lincah oleh Datuk Omardin Mauju dan Seni Gayung Fatani oleh guru Anwar Wahab. Gaya ini telah menerajui PESAKA sejak penubuhannya. Pada tahun 1980, badan payung yang mewakili sekolah silat di Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei dan Singapura telah bersidang di Jakarta dan membentuk Persekutuan Pencak Silat Antarabangsa (Persekutuan Pencak Silat Antarabangsa atau PERSILAT). Pada Sukan Asia Tenggara (SEA) di Jakarta pada tahun 1979, silat memulakan kerjaya sebagai sukan kompetitif. Kejohanan Dunia Pencak Silat kemudiannya dianjurkan di Singapura pada tahun 1980 dan di Jakarta pada tahun 1981 dan 1982. Kejohanan kejuaraan pertama di luar Asia berlangsung di Austria pada tahun 1986. Silat juga telah diperkenalkan sebagai sukan pameran di Sukan Asia 2002 di Korea. Pada 2006, Kerajaan Persekutuan mengiktiraf silat sebagai seni mempertahankan diri rasmi Malaysia dan termaktub dalam Akta Warisan Negara (Akta Warisan Negara), menjadikannya sebahagian daripada khazanah negara yang dilindungi. Lebih daripada sekadar koleksi teknik pertempuran; ia adalah sebahagian daripada budaya Melayu seperti mana-mana bentuk pendidikan lain dan menyediakan lelaki muda untuk dewasa. Oleh kerana itu, terdapat penekanan yang kuat dalam seni ini pada pertahanan diri. Penekanan inilah yang menyebabkan Silat tersebar ke seluruh Eropah dan kini Amerika Syarikat. Hari ini, ahli silat, kumpulan minat dan aktiviti promosi ditemui bukan sahaja di Asia Tenggara tetapi juga di Amerika, Jepun, Britain dan Perancis di mana organisasi seperti Persekutuan Pencak Silat United Kingdom, Persatuan Silat United Kingdom dan Pencak Silat Bongkot berpusat. . Dalam era teknologi baru, laman web tentang Silat telah muncul dan telah menjadi tempat pertemuan pengamal dalam talian.
